Oleksandr Nikoriak

Chairman of VAOKS

He is an expert in the field of cultural heritage protection, architecture and construction with over 10 years of experience in civil service. He went from a state expert and an assistant of a People's Deputy to the director of the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration, which was created on his initiative. During his leadership, a number of systemic changes were initiated, in particular, the Center for the Conservation of Archaeological Objects was created and the city's targeted programs for the preservation of Kyiv's heritage were developed and implemented for the first time.

  • Beginning of his career

    He worked as a state expert in the field of construction and held the position of assistant consultant to the People's Deputy of Ukraine.

    He founded the municipal institution "Center for the Conservation of Archaeological Objects", which is engaged in the preservation of archaeological artifacts.

  • Heritage protection during war

    At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he organized measures to secure 28 monuments of monumental art in Kyiv together with the public (without using budget funds). Among the protected objects are monuments to St. Volodymyr, Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka and others. Photo and video recordings of these measures are currently being analyzed by international professional community.

    He holds the position of VAOKS and continues his active work in the field of protection and popularization of the heritage of Ukraine.

  • Education

    He received his education at leading higher educational institutions of Ukraine, including the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, the University of Banking, the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, and the National Academy of Public Administration

  • Management at the Kyiv City State Administration

    On his initiative and with the support of the Kyiv City Council, a separate Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage was created for the first time in the city.

  • Implementation of the city target program

    In 2018, he developed and implemented the city target program "Protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of Kyiv for 2019–2021."

    Subsequently, he ensured the adoption and implementation of the next program for 2022–2024.

  • Management activities

    He ensured the coordination, approval and monitoring of the implementation of city projects related to cultural heritage.
