VAOKS discusses modern approaches to cultural heritage protection in Warsaw
“This was a very warm and inspiring meeting. We saw that Ukraine has much to share with the world,” said Oleksandr Nikoryak, CEO of VAOKS.
Discussions focused on how EU countries are changing their approaches to safeguarding historic monuments and how these practices could be applied in Ukraine. During the working visit, Oleksandr Nikoryak, CEO of VAOKS, met with Warsaw’s chief conservator and the head of the Association of Polish Conservators.
Participants reviewed legislative aspects. Poland recently adopted a law on heritage protection aimed at preventing the loss of cultural sites and uncontrolled development. The law established a clear state policy and support system.
In Ukraine, work has begun to implement modern international practices. Ukrainian specialists have started translating ICOMOS documents — international charters, recommendations, and guidelines on cultural heritage preservation — into Ukrainian for the first time since 2000. These documents form the legislative basis for many countries worldwide.
To commemorate the meeting, VAOKS presented its book on territorial heritage management, “Territory Management. Ancient Kyiv Reserve” to Polish colleagues. The publication drew significant interest, as no similar systemic approach yet exists in Poland.
